You can of course buy a can of pinto beans and have them in your pantry when you want to add them to your tacos or a salad.
But you can also easily make a big pan of pinto beans and serve them with rice or potatoes.
If you buy a bag of pinto beans you can make 10 times more beans from a bag of dried pinto beans than you get in a can of beans.
Now dried beans normally take a lot of time to make them editable but enter our trusted Instant Pot and it takes a fraction of the time.
Do You Need To Soak Dried Beans Before Cooking In An Pressure Cooker?
In this recipe, there is no need to soak the beans you can cook them straight away. You only need to wash the beans.
If you have time you can pre-soak dried beans between 4-6 hours in water. Add 2 to 3 times the volume of the beans in water.
The cooking time in pressure will be 7 to 9 minutes.
You can also cook the dried beans in the Instant Pot for 30 minutes and leave the beans with the lid closed between 1 to 2 hours to get soft beans.
The choice is yours to choose what fits you best.
Instant Pot Pinto Beans Ingredients
To make these pinto beans you need the following ingredients and put them on the grocery shopping list:
- Dried pinto beans
- Onion
- Garlic
- Cumin
- Chili powder
- Dark soy sauce
- Hot sauce
- Water or vegetable stock
- Fresh pepper
How To Make Pressure Cooker Pinto Beans
It is very easy to make pinto beans from scratch and it is really cheap because you buy dried pinto beans in big bags.
Start with finely chopping the onion and mincing the garlic. Set your Instant Pot to Sauté on high.
When the pot is warm add oil before adding the onion and garlic.
Sauté and stir the onion mixture for about 3 minutes, until soft and translucent.
Then add the cumin, hot sauce, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, and salt. Stir for a couple of seconds.
Add water and stir it through. Wash the pinto beans in a colander or mesh strainer and put them in the Instant Pot.
Now add the soy sauce and black pepper.
Press the "Cancel" button on your pressure cooker. Close the lid and secure it, set the valve to the sealing position.
Select Pressure cooker or Manual button and cook on High Pressure for 50-60 minutes.
When the cooking time is done let the pressure cooker naturally release for 15 minutes. Release any remaining pressure.
Open Instant Pot and stir. Serve immediately.
Why Are My Pinto Beans Still Hard?
Depending on the number of pinto beans in the pressure cooker it can take more time to soften the pinto beans.
When your pinto beans are not completely soft just close the Instant Pot and cook on high pressure for another 10 minutes.
You can also leave the lid on the pot and let the beans sit for 1 or 2 hours. They will soften as well.
How To Store Pinto Beans
You can store these Instant Pot pinto beans in various ways and have the following options:
- Refrigerator – you can store pinto beans in the fridge. Let them cool completely before proceeding. Put them in a leak-free and airtight food container or a Ziploc bag. You can store them in the fridge for up to 5 days.
- Freezer – you can also store pinto beans in the freezer for up to 5 months. Again let the pinto beans cool completely first then store them with the liquids from the Instant Pot in an airtight food container or Ziploc bag.
How To Reheat Pinto Beans
If you cooked pinto beans and stored them in the fridge or freezer you have various ways to reheat them:
- Instant Pot – you can use your pressure cooker or Instant Pot to reheat pinto beans. If they are frozen put the frozen pinto beans in the pot and add 1/3 cup water. Close the lid and secure, turn the valve to the sealing position and cook on Pressure Cooking, Steam or Manual for 8 minutes. If your pinto beans are not frozen set the time to 5 minutes and natural release for 5 minutes then quick release
- Dutch oven – another way to reheat pinto beans is to put them in a Dutch oven add 1/3 to 1/2 cup water and bring to a simmer and let the beans warm through in 5 minutes

- 1½ tsp garlic powder
